{"id":1874,"date":"2021-05-29T10:33:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-29T06:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mcmmediahub.aus.edu\/?p=1874"},"modified":"2021-10-22T18:11:57","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T14:11:57","slug":"muted-eid-celebrations-in-bhopal-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mcmmediahub.aus.edu\/index.php\/2021\/05\/29\/muted-eid-celebrations-in-bhopal-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Muted Eid celebrations in Bhopal, India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Avp4ziAUeCS0Ct7CMbfYlTMbs-_tNylh\/preview\" width=\"720\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Journalism student Abeer Khan reports on the muted Eid celebrations in the Indian city of Bhopal.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By Abeer Khan&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BHOPAL, INDIA \u2013 Eid customs involving family gatherings and congregational prayers are absent this year as the state government has imposed a \u201ccorona curfew.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The curfew, which was expected to be lifted on April 17, has been extended till Tuesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A typical Eid consists of men going for prayer to <em>Idgah <\/em>and<em> <\/em>family members visiting each other to exchange festive greetings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Idgah<\/em> is the name for a historical mosque in the city, where only congregational Eid prayers are held twice a year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparation for Eid involves shopping for new clothes and ingredients to prepare the traditional meal. As access to supplies remains limited and families face death or disease, many did not celebrate like they normally would.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGiven the situation, I am just grateful to have been able to celebrate Eid at all,\u201d said Archana Zulfiqar, a resident of Bhopal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, traditional customs became impossible to practice as individuals have been forced to remain indoors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to government records, there were 7,895 active cases in the city on May 29.
