{"id":3057,"date":"2022-03-04T08:37:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-04T04:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mcmmediahub.aus.edu\/?p=3057"},"modified":"2022-03-14T08:53:49","modified_gmt":"2022-03-14T04:53:49","slug":"english-department-hosts-return-of-open-mic-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mcmmediahub.aus.edu\/index.php\/2022\/03\/04\/english-department-hosts-return-of-open-mic-events\/","title":{"rendered":"English Department hosts return of Open Mic events"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Haidy Abdelazim<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH \u2013 Holding its first in-person Open Mic Night since the start of the pandemic, the American University of Sharjah\u2019s Department of English on March 2 hosted dozens of performers, including singers, musicians, poets, and storytellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event took place in front of the Language building on campus at 5 p.m.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Event organizers encouraged both students and faculty to take part in performing original or borrowed work. Some contents touched on sensitive topics like the Beirut Blast and the Palestinian struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme of the event was influenced by the novel and film adaptation,&nbsp;\u201c<em>The Perks of Being a Wallflower.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Open Mic did wonders in providing a safe space for those who may have ever considered themselves a wallflower by a welcoming atmosphere for everyone,\u201d said AUS student Saleha Saqib.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistant Professor of English Dr. Eric L.
