{"id":4948,"date":"2024-02-29T11:19:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-29T07:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mcmmediahub.aus.edu\/?p=4948"},"modified":"2024-03-14T11:19:56","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T07:19:56","slug":"expert-offers-advice-on-a-healthy-ramadan-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mcmmediahub.aus.edu\/index.php\/2024\/02\/29\/expert-offers-advice-on-a-healthy-ramadan-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Expert offers advice on a healthy Ramadan experience"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Annalisa Lewis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH \u2013 People fasting during the day in Ramadan should eat <em>Iftar<\/em> and <em>Suhoor<\/em> meals slowly to avoid overeating and gaining weight, something known to happen during the Holy Month, faculty and staff heard during a Feb. 21 presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ghina Lawand, a dietician and obesity patient educator from Novo Nordisk, also advised the audience that <em>Suhoor<\/em>, usually eaten between 3 and 4 a.m., shouldn\u2019t be skipped during Ramadan, as it\u2019s the most important meal of the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One tip an eater can use to distract themself during any meal, she said, is to drink a large amount of water. Lawand said this can trick someone\u2019s body into thinking it\u2019s satisfied, and help reduce any cravings.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She suggested keeping a food diary. Studies show people who keep dietary records lose two-to-three times more weight than those who don\u2019t, according to Lawand. Another tip she gave was to walk for at least 150 minutes per week.
