UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH\u2014 Students at the American University of Sharjah say they are developing a love for matcha, a powdered version of green tea which can be served hot or iced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tala Zoubi, a junior in the Department of Media Communication, said she drinks \u201cat least one matcha daily.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s becoming a replacement for coffee,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other students may have the same idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jaicen Regal, a cashier at Backyard in the Engineering Science Building, said the \u201cMatcha Cloud\u201d \u2013 featuring a vanilla foam on top \u2013\u00a0is the most popular item.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI make 40 of them every day,\u201d he added. Regal said that while matcha drinks aren\u2019t cheap \u2013 some places on campus charge AED 25-30 range, not counting for alternative milks \u2013 \u201cit\u2019s worth the price for the experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some campus cafes offer unsweetened matcha drinks and lattes. At Racks Boardgame Cafe, located in the library, cashier Justine Kabrio said most customers \u201clike it prepared sweet.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMatcha culture has risen in the UAE and has infiltrated AUS,\u201d Kabrio added. \u201cAlmost all cafes sell the drink on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
