UNIVERSITY CITY – The Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Department, under the Operation Facility Department, at the American University of Sharjah had to make changes to campus operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic institutions lockdown said a MEP representative in a recent interview.
According to the spokesperson, some of the modifications made include adjusting air conditioning as per the occupancy mode, optimized lighting control according to building closure schedules and tenancy status, and reductions of water usage wherever possible.
Additionally, life safety equipment and networks undergo checks before areas are locked down.
Currently, the existing electrical network in the library has been altered to a new mode to maintain a minimum level of lighting under the locked down state of the campus, the representative said.
Whilst working closely with Civil Maintenance, MEP manages academic buildings, sports facilities, housing, and dormitories.
The representative said MEP primarily takes care of the relevant needs for the entirety of the AUS campus and their work includes the coordination and implementation of various prompt actions with the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority. But MEP is not limited to only liaise with SEWA and many other supporting government bodies responsible for activities such as sewage, irrigation, and logistics.
MEP aims to keep the campus healthy, sustainable, energy-efficient, user friendly for faculty, staff and students, and even aesthetically pleasing, the spokesperson said.
