UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH— About 50 people attended the opening of the Manbat Farmers Market at the American University of Sharjah Sept. 7, featuring kiosks selling fresh and organic produce as well as freshly made snacks and smoothies.
AUS administrators said the event, which brought out students and faculty, was an initiative of the university’s Sustainability Office.
Manbat Farmers Market, a partnership between Arada and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, promotes locally grown, healthy produce in the UAE. The market, located at the gazebo near the women’s dorms, will take place on campus every Thursday, from 5-9 p.m. until the semester ends.
Julia Carlow, the acting head of the Sustainability Office, said AUS launched its first Farmers Market in 2018. She called the effort “one of our most meaningful initiatives for sustainable community engagement.”
