UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH – While the American University of Sharjah fell 35 places in the overall QS World University Rankings, it improved in several key subject areas, Chancellor Kevin Mitchell announced in a June 20 letter to faculty.

The QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings is an annual publication of college ratings.

Mitchell stated that AUS improved in the QS subject area rankings this year in Engineering and Technology, Computer Science, Electrical  Engineering, Social Sciences and Management, and Accounting and Finance.

He highlighted that AUS entered the rankings in the areas of Arts and Humanities, and that it remained at number seven in the QS Arab Region University Rankings.

This, he noted, “places AUS amongst the top 10 institutions for the sixth consecutive year.”

“[R]anking systems do not address all that we do well or acknowledge the full range of contributions to teaching, research, and scholarly and creative activities, and service roles,” said Mitchell. “However, rankings play a role in how AUS is perceived and it will continue to be important to improve performance in ways that are compatible with the university’s mission.”
