UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH – Holding its first in-person Open Mic Night since the start of the pandemic, the American University of Sharjah’s Department of English on March 2 hosted dozens of performers, including singers, musicians, poets, and storytellers.
The event took place in front of the Language building on campus at 5 p.m.
Event organizers encouraged both students and faculty to take part in performing original or borrowed work. Some contents touched on sensitive topics like the Beirut Blast and the Palestinian struggle.
The theme of the event was influenced by the novel and film adaptation, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.”
“The Open Mic did wonders in providing a safe space for those who may have ever considered themselves a wallflower by a welcoming atmosphere for everyone,” said AUS student Saleha Saqib.
Assistant Professor of English Dr. Eric L. De Barros enjoyed the event, saying “From a pedagogical perspective, it was instructive to see students courageously sharing their ideas in an open forum.”
Food and refreshments were provided for attendees to snack on while enjoying the event.
