UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH – American University of Sharjah student Seif Mohamed won first place for powerlifting in the weight class 105 plus during the intramural sports competition on March 3.

“I had to train for four weeks in preparation for the competition,” said Mohamed.

He said that the competition required the three types of lifts which are squat, bench press and deadlift.

“This was the first time AUS officially had all three lifts in a competition,” said Fitness Trainer Salem Hassan.

Hassan said that Mohamed’s performance was excellent because he was “prepared, disciplined and committed.”

When asked about what got him into the sport of powerlifting, Mohamed said it was primarily because he watched many competitions and compilations of the heaviest lifts in history on YouTube. His biggest inspirations are the power lifters Eddie Hall and Ed Coan.

Mohamed said that he started lifting weights five years ago and has been practicing ever since.

The competition was held across two weeks, from Feb. 21 to March 3, with the awards ceremony on the final day. It consisted of many other sports including tennis, table tennis, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cricket and swimming.
