UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH – No injuries were reported Thursday afternoon when American University of Sharjah security personnel, responding to a motorist whose vehicle had stalled near the Sports Complex, ended up battling an engine fire.
Security officers were already on their way to assist the Arabic-speaking driver when at about 3:50 p.m. the vehicle’s engine suddenly burst into flames. They fought the fire with extinguishers, including some provided by motorists, as well as a large, wheeled unit stored in the Sports Complex. Onlookers could hear windows cracking and bursting from the heat.
Other security personnel blocked access to the scene and rerouted late-afternoon campus traffic.
Sharjah firefighters arrived on campus shortly after 4 p.m. and used special equipment to open the hood and finally put out the fire.
