SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates – Cancer survivor, Tina Chagoury, said in a Zoom interview with an audience at the American University of Sharjah on Oct.12 that breast cancer can happen to anyone.
The breast cancer survivor said regular examinations are important as the disease could affect anyone whether they are young, old, healthy or unhealthy.
“I always advocate for reducing the screening age from 40 to 35 because our region has the highest, our region, I am talking the Arab world, has the highest rate of breast cancer diagnosis at an age below 40 in the world,” she said.
She added that every woman, even under the age of 20, should be educated on conducting self-checks. A person who is going through the illness should not compare themselves to others as the treatment depends on the age of the person and stage of the illness. The best way to do this is by consulting peer-reviewed articles regarding success rates of treatments.
Every year in October, countries all around the world celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is known as Pinktober.
The goal of Pinktober is to create awareness, educate people about the disease, and raise money to help treat those who are affected by it.
