UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH – The Department of International Studies at the American University of Sharjah is offering revised courses in fall 2022.
Students will be able to enroll in modified versions of previously taught courses. A new syllabus has been developed for the revised courses including Social Theory, which will be taught by Dr. Kurt Mertel.
This course will not assume any prior background in social theory and is intended to be an advanced introduction to the philosophical foundations of sociology and the social science, according to an INS newsletter sent by email to faculty and students.
According to the department, Social Theory will be beneficial for students who want to work in government, foreign service, or the public sector, as well as those who want to pursue graduate studies in the humanities and social sciences.
In the fall of 2022, Dr. Bethany Shockley will teach Comparative Politics of the Middle East and North Africa. This course will count as an INS major elective, a Middle East studies minor elective, and an INS minor elective.
“I am excited for the new class and I hope students will enjoy it,” said Shockley.
According to the INS newsletter, this course will look at the domestic politics of the region’s countries, as well as the region’s larger political topics, such as economic development, social change, and public engagement.
