UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH – Knowing the facts and the audience are the two most important techniques in debating, said American University of Sharjah Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. Giacomo Chiozza during a debating workshop on April 12.

“Debating is a skill,” said Chiozza, speaking to about 20 students. “It takes practice, practice, practice. There are no shortcuts.”

Knowing the topic and listening to the opposing team well to rebut are key elements of debating, he said.

After giving the students tips, the workshop ended with a quiz to test the attendees’ knowledge about debating.

The event was organized by the AUS Debating Society and Philosophy Club.

The workshop “Mastering the Art of Persuasion” took place in the Floating Theatre in the Student Centre from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
