UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH – Thirteen American University of Sharjah students learned how to sign Ramadan-related phrases and words in American Sign Language during a workshop hosted by the ASL Initiative on April 10 in the Student Center from 5-6 p.m.
The event began with everyone watching a video explaining Ramadan’s purpose and its practices. Students afterward practiced signing words in ASL such as “Muslim,” “Allah,” and “Islam.”
According to ASL Initiative President Lujain Khalil, the goal of the workshop was to show others that sign language is diverse and inclusive of different cultures. She added that the club hoped to interest students in learning it by relating the event to Ramadan.
