SHARJAH – An exhibition displaying the work of Scottish painter and lithographer David Roberts is currently on display at The Sharjah Art Museum.
David Roberts was an early independent artist from Great Britain who travelled to the Middle East in September 1838. His artworks consist mainly of paintings and lithographs.
Lithography is an art form that consists of using a flat stone or metal plate on which an image is imprinted using a greasy substance such as oil, fat, or wax to fill in the negative area of a picture. Paint is then added on a separate piece of paper, which imprints the image from the plate.
The artwork on display shows Roberts’ trip to many places in the Arab region including Petra, Cairo and Alexandria. Roberts also travelled to Hebron, Jerusalem, Nablus, Nazareth, and Tiberias in Palestine, eventually reaching Beirut in Lebanon. He returned to London from Beirut in May 1839. During his eight-month journey, Roberts created 247 works of art.
The exhibition displays the artworks in 10 separate sections, with blocks containing up to eight paintings dedicated to a certain time period or city hung on the walls in gold frames.
The exhibition is accessible from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day except Friday at the Sharjah Arts Museum and is open until Dec. 31.
