UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH – The English Fellows at the American University of Sharjah launched the new issue of the student-written journal “Asrar” (Arabic for secret) in the Language Building Oct. 10.

First introduced in 2014, it contains research papers and creative writing essays written by students of different majors. The journal’s current issue addresses gender expectations, miscommunication and women’s struggle against the patriarchy.

Around 50 students attended the event, in which free food and snacks were offered. QR codes were placed around the building for students to access the journal through their phones.

Department of English Head Paul Almonte said he wants students to get their “voices out there” through this publication. He added that a creative writing class will be offered in Fall 2024.

English sophomore Habiba Abdelmohsen said this event is going to “help students across different majors at AUS recognize that they don’t have to be English majors to contribute to this journal.”
