UNIVERSITY CITY – The American University of Sharjah’s Community Service office has been conducting English classes for 30 Bee’ah workers every Monday and Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the multi-purpose room.

Student volunteer Mohammad Rayyan Rehman said Feb. 25 the main purpose of the program is to improve the Bee’ah employees’ proficiency in the language in order to better communicate with bosses and coworkers.

The volunteers translate sentences from Hindi to English, he said.

Community Services Coordinator Amawi El Khalifa initiated the idea of the program, he said.

Rayyan said the classes were first held every Friday but that interfered with the worker’s free time and Jumu’ah prayer.

The program originally started with 20 student volunteers teaching in it, but due to midterms currently going on, there are now five to eight students involved.

The community service organization is also planning to have Arabic lessons by the end of March, he said.

Rayyan said the workers are passionate about learning and are grateful for college students dedicating their time.
