UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH – Luz Salem did not expect that she would be diagnosed with cancer in 2018 at the age of 31. After all, she was healthy and did not have a family history of the disease.
But then the American University of Sharjah alumna noticed a lump in her breast, a terrifying moment she recounted to participants in a Student Council-organized Oct. 25 webinar.
She was scared, she told the audience, and did not want to go to the hospital for a diagnosis. But supportive friends pressed her to see a doctor, and the diagnosis was confirmed. Though initially keeping the news from her family in Palestine, she began treatment, trying to face the ordeal with a positive outlook and a sense of humor.
Ultimately successful in her life-or-death battle, Salem recounted these events during the online session, meant to raise awareness and educate students about breast cancer.
The webinar also included input from Dr. Ghaleb Husseini, a professor in the Chemical Engineering Department, who discussed recent research into drug delivery systems for cancer patients.
Husseini described both the different types of tumors found in the body and the common types of cancer.
He also pointed out different ways of treating cancer, including chemotherapy, radiation, and ultrasound, and explained each in detail.
