UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH— The American University of Sharjah’s Farmers Market – held Wednesdays from 3-5 p.m. in front of the Student Center – promotes and supports local farms, an AUS staff member said Wednesday.
The Farmers Market reflects the fact that in “recent years there has been a rise of local produce that is available in the UAE,” Sustainability Office Project Coordinator Nathalie Curabba said. She added that produce such as fruits and vegetables come from Merlin Farms and Healthy Farm.
Curabba added that the Farmers Market will sell HeroGo boxes with edible produce otherwise considered “ugly food” and discarded for not having “the right shape.”
The Farmers Market, Curabba said, is one part of a larger effort to help create a more sustainable campus by building awareness and educating through behavior and practices about everyday purchases.
