UNIVERSITY CITY – The Ministry of Education has announced on Feb. 29, that all university trips and events will be canceled with immediate effect as part of precautionary steps to limit the spread of COVID-19.

According to an email sent by American University of Sharjah Chief Operating Officer Dr. Jeannette Vinke, the activities will not be rescheduled until further notice from the government.

“The current directive issued by the Ministry of Education does not impact the academic calendar,” added Vinke.

She stated in the email that classes would proceed as scheduled.

However, the cancellations of events and activities can result in significant challenges, added Vinke.

The College of Arts and Sciences dean announced on March 1 that the Pianopalooza event, originally planned for March 2-3, was canceled.

He added that those who purchased their tickets already would get full refunds.

Vinke stated that AUS is remaining in close contact with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health.

The university will take “precautions to address health concerns and the necessary steps to maintain compliance with Ministry directives,” added Vinke.
