OSA recognizes clubs, students for service in challenging time

UNIVERSITY CITY, SHARJAH – The American University of Sharjah’s Office of Student Affairs announced the winners of the annual Appreciation and Recognition awards during an Instagram livestream on May 3. 

This award recognized undergraduate students for their contribution in sports and extracurricular activities. 

Vice Provost for Student Life Dr. Lisa Moscaritolo said the student achievements this year surpassed her expectations on what can be accomplished to make the community vibrant while working online. 

She added that “it was not an easy task to make a decision on who could win these individual awards.” 

Winners included students who were active in clubs, organizations, sports, the residential halls, community service and leadership programs.

“It took several semesters of effort to win this, but it was so worth it,” said Zarlish Kamil, recipient of the Most Proactive Student of the Year Award. 

Other winners in this category included Mariam al Zaabi and Mariam al Harmoodi. 

Pavithra Ramprasad received the Most Outstanding Student Leader Award. 

Seethong Kamphan Thong won the Best Resident Assistant Award whereas Amaan Mohammed and Yara AlAbraash, Most Virtually Engaged Athlete. Presidents of the Indian Cultural Club (ICC) and the American Society of Mechanical (ASME) received President of the Year for their efforts. 

Additionally, OSA acknowledged clubs and organizations for their dedication towards community engagement through the Best Interest-Oriented Club Award which ASME and the Astronomy Club bagged. 

OSA similarly awarded the Best Cultural Club Award, to ICC and the Emirati Cultural Club (ECC). 

OSA introduced a new Best Virtual Program Award recognizing the effort of hosting online events amidst the pandemic. These were given to the Gastronomy Club for “International Cuisine Week” and the Indian Cultural Club for “Hindustani Sanskriti.”
